THORNBURY HIGH SCHOOL

Our 9 to 10 Middle School encourages a greater depth of study in all curriculum areas. It also encourages a degree of specialisation in particular areas as students start to shape their future more directly.

In the middle school there is elective choice as well as core subjects. LOTE is compulsory at year 9, but an elective at year 10. The arts and technology subjects are in the two elective blocks, which are semester based, but students must do at least one subject of each.

Year 9 and 10 students are in elective classes together. Students in year 10 are able to take a VET (Vocational Education and Training) subject through the VET cluster every Wednesday afternoon. Some students are also offered the opportunity to do a VCE subject.

Elective studies include:

• Crime and Law

• Information Technology

• Automotive

• Food Technology

• Visual Communication

• Photography

• Media

• Wood

• Musich

• Drama

• Study of Society and Environment

• Sport, Girls’ Sport/ Recreation

• Robotics

• Languages other than English

Leadership, a sense of belonging and self worth are achieved through strong pastoral programs, numerous extra curricula activities, camps, alternative programs, scholarships, competitions and Peer Support.

Access to career advice, work placement and Tertiary information provide a great advantage to the students in planning their futures. Careful counselling assists students in shaping subject choices without closing off options in the VCE.
