Achievements

Achievements 2015

 

  • Over 50 students from Music, Theatre Studies, and Media Studies were involved in the inaugural Sydney Performing Arts Tour. Students spent a week participating in workshops at the acclaimed Belvoir St Theatre and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS), as well as public concerts at the Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour, and the Manly Public Pavillon.

  • Congratulations to the Year 7 and VCE Boys Soccer Teams, who both placed runners up (in their respective grades) in the State Finals. Both teams are ranked 2nd in the State, having won 12 consecutive games to reach the finals.

  • THS Student Voice students participated in the 40 Hour Famine, raising a phenomenal $2000 for disadvantaged people around the world.

  • Sport Aerobics Squad entered the Victorian State AEROSkools Championships, scoring multiple placements including 2nd place in the Senior Trio Division.

  • Congratulations to Robert Leota from Thornbury High School who scored for Australia in the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games. Robert was awarded a Commonwealth Youth Games Silver medal, and was selected to play for the Youth Sevens team, as well as invited to try out for the senior Team for the Olympic Games in Rio Next 2016.

  • Thornbury High School is proud to offer their congratulations to Year 8 student, Juan Camilo Yusti Gaviria, who has become the Intermediate Mens’ National Figure Skating Champion at the 2015 National Figure Skating Championships. Congratulations, Juan!

  • Congratulations to Akira F, Felix M, Hibo H, and Noah G of Year 9, who are all recipients of the Department of Education’s Victorian Young Leaders to China program. They each received a grant to fund their own independent overseas exchange to China in 2016.

 

Achievements 2014

 

  • Congratulations to Anna Diacos, whose VCE Media film, “The Subjects”, was selected as part of Top Screen’s “Season of Excellence” public screening program, where it won the Audience Choice Award. The film also screened at the Made In Melbourne Film Festival as part of the High School Showcase, where it won Best Film.

  • Well done to all involved in the school production of The Little Shop of Horrors, which played to sellout audiences in THS’s own Kaye Coghlan Centre. Featuring over 60 students from Years 7-11 and almost a dozen dedicated staff, the show was a great success.

  • Almost all VCE students received an offer of a tertiary place for 2014. 55% received their first preference and 81% received one of their first 3 preferences.

  • Theo Benehoutsos, year 10, has the opportunity to trial for the Australian Swimming Team for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. We wish Theo the best of luck.

  • Adam Garganis competed in the Australian National Championships in Sydney where he took out the gold medal for the Men’s Under 18 5000 Walk, bronze in the Under 18 Men’s Pole Vault and finished 4th in the Men’s Under 20 10,000 Walk.

 

Achievements 2013

 

  • New programs developed at year 7 – Concept for high achievers and Extend for students below the expected level.

  • New five year contract for our Principal

  • Latest student survey results are excellent and maybe close to our best results ever! Connectedness to peers and school, student motivation and morale all have percentiles in the top 5% of the state.

  • New on track data shows that 85% of year 12’s are in education or training (45% at University)

  • Bullying survey results 2012 showed significant increase in enrolments over the past 6 years has not resulted in any further increase in bullying

  • Year 12 pathways for 2013 92% of students received their first, second or third choice

 

Achievements 2012

 

  • Congratulations to Robert Leota, member of the Australia boys Rugby team and Adam Garganis, Australian Team for 1000 metre walk.

  • Successful implementation of the year 9 laptop program.

  • Congratulations to Adam Garganis state champion in the 1500 metre walk and Stella Radford state champion in both steeplechase and 800 metres.

  • Music department wins a gold shield at the Melbourne bands festival.

  • Nine students make it through to the state finals in Athletics.

  • Excellent parent survey results.

  • Production of musical ‘back to the 80’s’ an outstanding success

  • Thornbury High celebrates its 50th Golden Jubilee anniversary.

  • The My School web site shows that between year 7 (2009) and year 9 (2011) , students have maintained achievement levels in Numeracy and improved in Reading, Writing, Grammar and Spelling.

  • Thornbury High School achieves outstanding VCE results. One third of students with an ATAR above 80, 15 students with study scores above 40, and, median study score of 29.

 

Achievements for 2011

 

  • In the State Athletics the school received one first place, two second places and three third places. Special mention to Stella Radford who is the State Champion in the 1,500 metres and Jake Bridson runner-up in the shot put.

  • The production of Beauty and the Beast has been a stunning success

  • Marcus Tosevski, Fabio Maccarone, Johnny Bonello, Dean Iovenitti have won through to the ‘Chess Victoria’ grand finals at Brighton Grammar School.

  • Outstanding staff survey results with the following categories in the top 10% of the state ; student management, parent partnerships, student motivation, role clarity and manageable work demands.

  • Jordan King year 7 received a perfect score in the Rio Tinto science competition. Jordan will be flown to Canberra to receive his award.

  • Outstanding Student Survey results with all categories in the top 25 % of the State. In particular school connectedness, student motivation and Learning confidence are in the top 5%.

  • Year 9 student Stella Radford is the state champion in cross country for her under 16 age group.

  • Eight students have made it through to the State finals in AthletIcs to be held in term 4.

  • Thornbury High is the winner of the district athletics for the third year in a row winning close to 50% of the events.

  • The school is performing above like schools in learning, engagement and pathways – see school performance summary 2010 in reports, plans and surveys.

  • The My School web site shows that between year 7 and 9, students have maintained achievement levels in Writing and Spelling and improved in Reading, Grammar and Numeracy.

 

Achievements for 2010

 

  • Naplan results for reading show an average improvement of one level from year 7 to 9. This excellent result is above state average.

  • The school has appointed a second Assistant Principal. Congratulations to Simon Townley.

  • Senior concert band receives a silver shield for their performance at the Melbourne Bands Festival.

  • 2010 student survey results are outstanding across all areas with most categories approaching 100%.

  • ‘Congratulations to you as Principal of a school with such a creative, engaged and communicative team of young people’. From Terry Haywood, Alliance for International Education to our Classtv students.

  • Dramatic increase in female enrolments for Year 7, 2011. Overall enrolments continue to be strong.

  • Thornbury High WINS the District Athletics. Our junior boys and girls won their age group.

  • Thornbury High now has a ceiling of 200 students on its year 7 enrolments for 2012.

  • 93% of year 12 students have received a tertiary place, with 83% of students receiving their first or second choice at University or TAFE.

 

Achievements for 2009

 

  • Thornbury High launched the school’s new online past students (Alumni) web site on July 16th at the reunion of the class of 2008

  • Current indications point to a 33% increase in enrolments at year 7 for 2010

  • Thornbury is the top school in the District Athletics with our junior and senior girls winning their age group

  • Thornbury receives $200,000 from the Federal government for a Trade Training Centre for Hospitality

  • Two year 12 students receive close to $45,000 each from the Dafydd Lewis Trust (for Engineering and Medical Radiation)

  • Thornbury High is part of a $11million cluster for a range of trades

  • The School and Furlan Club sponsored bushfire appeal raises over $2000

  • 14 new staff appointed as school population grows by over 100 students

  • Latest student survey results places the school in the top 5% in the State for student motivation, learning confidence, connectedness, student morale and teacher effectiveness

  • Excellent staff survey results with all but one category in the top 25% and the highest ranking, effective discipline policy, in the top 5% of state secondary schools

 

Achievements for 2008

 

  • The latest outstanding parent survey results places the school in the top 5% in the State for school improvement, classroom beaviour, reporting and transition

  • Thornbury has received a $200,000 grant from ‘Healthy Active Australia’ to produce a student made teen lifestyle program

  • In the latest student survey, Thornbury High is in the top 5% in areas of learning, morale, connectedness & motivation

  • The senior school band completed a successful tour of Sydney in July

  • The school council is delighted to announce that our Principal Peter Egeberg has renewed his contract for a further five years

  • Excellent VCE results for the third year in a row with over 20% of student receiving an ENTER score (for University) above 80

  • Peter Egeberg Principal wins national award for leadership

  • Teacher of the year award for Paul Van Eeden

  • Newly renovated and expanded library completed

  • 100% of VCE students complete year 12

  • ClassTV nominated again as best youth program

  • School is named as a priority school for international students

  • School reviewer gives Thornbury HS an Excellent report

  • Thornbury High has formed a partnership with The University of Melbourne to deliver the new Masters of Teaching for Teacher Candidates

  • The school has been identified as one of ten secondary schools in Victoria to have significantly improved student outcomes in the past 4 years

 

Achievements for 2006

 

  • 100% of the year 12 VCE students receive a University of TAFE offer

  • Senior school bands won Gold (second year running) and Silver shields in the Melbourne bands festival

  • School won the District Athletics for the second consecutive year

  • Our youth TV program (ClassTV) on Channel 31 won the best national youth program

  • Both students and parents surveys rate the school highly for student safety and school improvement

  • Thornbury High School named as a select entry school in 2008

  • Architect appointed to renovate Library for Leading Schools
