THORNBURY HIGH SCHOOL
Special Learning Needs & ESL
Literacy Program
A literacy support program has been developed over recent years.
It focuses on year 7, 8 and 9 students. If parental permission is granted students are withdrawn from Language classes and receive intensive literacy support. This program involves the delivery of a literacy intervention program, support for students in completing Compulsory Assessment Tasks (CAT’s) and class work in their subjects as well as activities to motivate engagement and learning.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) Program
Students qualify for EAL assistance if they have migrated from a non-English speaking country no more than seven years ago. The EAL students’ countries of origin are varied. Several teachers at the school are qualified to teach EAL. EAL students in years 10 to 12 have their own EAL English classes.
Integration Program
Thornbury High has an Integration Program for students that have been diagnosed with a disability or impairment.
Eligibility for the Program can be established in 7 areas of disability or impairment: (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hearing Impairment, Intellectual Disability, Physical Disability, Severe Behaviour Disorder, Severe Language Disorder and Visual Impairment).
Thornbury High receives additional resources to support these students. The students have regular Program Support Group Meetings which are attended by teachers, aides, parents, students, specialist teachers, consultants and where necessary by parent advocates.
Educational planning and the allocation of resources for students are based on the recommendations of the Program Support Group. Emphasis is placed on ensuring that all students on the Program have access to the curriculum and are able to participate in a high quality education program.
Numeracy
The school provides access to Mathletics free of charge to all students both at school and at home. This is a world renowned program which will assist all students to improve their numeracy skills. Go to www.mathletics.com and enter your child’s password.
Extend
Every year we enrol students into year 7 with literacy and numeracy skills ranging from a grade 5 to a year 8 level. There are, however, a small number of students operating at grade 4 level. The Extend program is designed for these students.
